Seminar On Challenges Of Rural Marketing In The 21st Centuryfriday

6th August, 2004 At Taj Residency, Bangalore Organised By The Rural Network (Aug 6, 2004)

BACKGROUND
The 2004-05 budget focuses extensively on the rural sector through tax sops on agro processing and removal of excise duty on tractors, increasing agricultural credit substantially, developing rural infrastructure, enhancing water availability and creative more jobs for thepoor. These initiatives are expected to give a boost to the rural economy and generate greater demand for corporate products.

More and more companies have already jumped on to the bandwagon to reach the rural household. Dedicated departments for rural marketing are becoming part of the corporate entity. In short, everyone is talking ‘rural’ which argurs well for rural marketing in the 21st century.

Yet are these initiatives sufficient? Are we all going along the tradden path, or are we wandering about in the rural wilderness? What has been the experience of those who have already ventured into the hinterland?

These are some of the issues that are going to be addressed at the seminar being organised by the Rural Network.

THE ORGANISERS
The Rural Network is an informal alliance, started two years ago, by four leading rural agencies, viz., Anugrah Madison-Chennai, MART-Delhi, Rural Relations-Pune and Sampark-Mumbai. Each of the alliance partner is specialised in one aspect of Rural Marketing apart from being a regional specialist. Through various initiatives, the Rural Network has been promoting the cause of rural marketing. The first of these was a seminar in Mumbai, followed by a Round Table on Rural Communication in Mumbai. The Rural Network has also supported a FICCI seminar on Rural Marketing held in Delhi last year, and the current seminar is the next in the series aimed at the South.
